The Artwork Story

Tuckeroo and Goodjeri Bambal (Northern Tamarind and Scrub Turkey Eggs)

This artwork by Justin Butler depicts how the rainforest environment gives an indication of when to harvest different foods.  The Northern Tamarind Tree (Tuckeroo) is a calendar plant for the Bandjin people.  When the tree flowers and bears fruit, it is the time to dig for the scrub turkey eggs (Goodgeri Bambal).  The large white dots in the painting represent the scrub turkey eggs and the tamarind flowers and fruit are shown as yellow dots.  The Bandjin people are the traditional owners of Hinchinbrook Island, the largest island on the Great Barrier Reef.
