The Artwork Story

The Falling Leaves design is based on an original painting by Queensland artist, Justin Butler and depicts the leaves (Gambal) falling to the rainforest floor at the end of the dry season. The ground is represented by circular dots in different colours to indicate the many colours of leaves that lay on the rainforest floor. The grey leaves represent the action of leaves falling from the rainforest canopy onto the floor.

The artist, Justin Butler is a descendent of the Kalkadoon people from the desert country of North West Queensland on his grandmother's side and the Bandjin people from the tropical rainforest region of Hinchinbrook Island in North Queensland on his grandfather's side. The Bandjin people are the traditional owners of Hinchinbrook Island, the largest island on the Great Barrier Reef of Australia.
