The Artwork Story
Ngapa Jukurrpa (Rain Spirits Dreaming)
Resplendent in the glorious, sun-drenched colours of the Australian Outback, Stephanie Napurrurla Nelson's original artwork depicts a traditional Water Dreaming story, “Ngapa Jukurrpa”, which was handed down to her through many generations of her Warlpiri ancestors over tens of thousands of years.
This artwork depicts a traditional story from a place on Warlpiri country called Mikanji. The story is about a rain ancestor who travelled to a dry creek bed at Mikanji and unleashed a huge storm. The storm was witnessed by two women. Their spirits can still be seen at Miknaji in the form of two river red gum trees (Ngapiri).
